When John Newton, ex-sea captain and, as yet, unsuccessful candidate for the Church of England ministry, finished his first book (an autobiography) in 1762 there was no ready publisher. Any thought that he was destined to become one of the best known authors of his age would have been as fantastic as the last 37 years of his life. But in both cases the improbable came about. As this set of books illustrates, John Newton authored more than the hymn "Amazing Grace." One of the great aspects of his Works is the inclusion of numerous personal and pastoral letters on a wide range of doctrinal and practical matters. To read some of them is to think he's speaking directly to you! As for the binding, Banner of Truth always does a great job. Their not-so-attractive dust covers conceal beautiful clothbound volumes with gold embossed lettering. They will certainly stand the test of time. ( )
