The best work of this great Australian author that I've yet read. She has a magical way with words. ( )

An interesting book which links children sent to the countryside during world war II with a couple of strange children that they find inhabiting the ruins of the local castle. At first they think they have just run away from home, but gradually they find that there is something very strange about the two brothers. A mix of history and mystery that will appeal to many. Very appropriate at the moment with the finding of one of England's lost kings. ( )

Not quite as wonderful as I'd hoped, especially given how very impressed I was by Sadie and Ratz.  I think it was a little long - I think Hartnett is better when she's more concise.  Of course, there were several stories being told here.... ( )

I didn't realise until I started this that it was a children's book, but it swept me along anyway. It tells the story of three children exiled to a country house in England during WW2. The writing is lovely and the story charming enough - not as unsettling as Hartnett's superb Thursday's Child, but probably aimed at a slightly younger audience. ( )

A brilliant story beautifully told. ( )
