Een boek vol citaten uit de Angelsaksische science fiction, kan dat boeiend zijn? En hoe lees je zoiets?

Neil Gaiman en Kim Newman hebben de citaten geordend in specifieke categorieën waarbij zo nu en dan een citaat ook nog van hun eigen commentaar werd voorzien. Het boek bestaat uit twee delen waarbij in het eerste de boekcitaten en in het tweede deel filmcitaten worden besproken. Ieder deel heeft zijn eigen categorieën met daarin weer subcategorieën. De citaten in een duidelijke context plaatsen maakt dat het heel leesbaar wordt.

Het meest moest ik lachen om het eerste hoofdstuk waarin blurbs (een pakkende korte tekst op de kaft van een boek om de aandacht van de kopers te trekken) worden opgesomd waaruit blijkt dat de schrijvers van deze blurbs het boek niet eens hebben gelezen of dat het zo algemeen is dat het op elk boek kan staan.

Door de manier van groeperen van citaten wordt duidelijk hoeveel clichés er in de science fiction zijn. Dit wordt heel duidelijk bij hoe de wetenschapper wordt neergezet of de vrouw of de held. Nu is dit boek van 1985 waardoor er ook wel een heel duidelijk tijdsbeeld van vroeger wordt weergegeven alhoewel ik het idee heb dat we van een aantal ingesleten ideeën nog niet bevrijd zijn. Wellicht interessant om een exercitie als deze nog eens te herhalen met modernere boeken. ( )

This is a point-and-laugh collection of extracts from sf books and films which are grotesquely over-written or badly written, and does pretty much what it says on the tin. Some of the extracts are pretty glorious but I'm afraid most just made me wince. I found the first half, which concentrates on books, much more interesting than the second half, which concentrates on films. ( )

"Ghastly Beyond Belief" is a book of assorted quotes from science fiction, fantasy, and horror, both in books and movies, with a bias towards science fiction. It includes bad back-cover blurbs, awful prose, ridiculous cliches, bad movie dialogue, bad movie posters, and so forth.

The book is written as a reminder of the worst aspects of the three genres, particularly SF, which is a laudible goal, and does include some fairly famous names and books, which is good. It manages to do all of this in a light-hearted way, which does make for easy reading.

In spite of all of this, I have several concerns. The first question is how some sources are considered more weighty than others. Certainly, some books are generally considered worse than others, or more popular, both of which might be reasons to feature one book more prominently than another. However, the selections do not seem to follow this pattern at all. None of Clarke's books get a mention, while Heinlen gets quoted multiple times for both "Number of the Beast" and "Starship Troopers". I don't believe Frank Herbert's Dune gets quoted at all, either. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Luan Ranzetta's "Yellow Inferno" is mentioned at least ten times.

Questioning the choice of works selected for quotes is largely a matter of personal taste, and no doubt a different reader would completely disagree with me. However, I found the lack of an index a questionable choice for a book of quotations, even when presented in the manner that it is. I want to be able to look up my favourite works, and see quotes for them. I can't do that.

In spite of my complaints, this is an enjoyable work, particularly for showing the sillier and poorly-written side of wider speculative fiction (and movies). ( )

If I quote my favourite entry from this book of the most awful quotations you will ever come across, you will immediately understand what the book is about and where its editors are coming from. It is a blurb (precisely from what I can't remember); the editors' comment follows in (brackets):

"Together, they faced the alien menace, armed only with their brains!"
("Well, my brain missed, Carruthers - throw yours.")

Those who like this sort of thing will find that this is the sort of thing they like. ( )
