This books was fun. Action packed, silly, sassy, and romantic, all at once. There is a moment toward the end where the heroine is TSTL, but she can be forgiven for being preoccupied, ( )

I thought this was a really cute book. I liked how the gnomes were brought into the story. The mystery aspect was solid, and the romance was great. ( )

The story was clever, the characters were fun. There was the ick factor with the gratuitous sex, but I skipped those pages. But overall, a fun read. Standalone read. ( )

The trouble with stepping outside genres that you know you like is that you may find you don't like the experiment. Nothing in the blurb for this book prepared me for the adultness of the material - which I could cope with as the writing was funny, the heroine, Jane, was bright and sparky and full of self-doubt. And the fireman, as everyone says, is HOT. The competitor for her affections is so revoltingly stereotypical that one wonders why she doesn't throw up like I wanted to on most occasions. I couldn't believe that such a person could exist, but then I read about US politics and think, well maybe they do. Why Jane loses her brainpower after finally getting some sex totally defeated me, though.
I know this book has been well received, and the reviews certainly made me think it was worth a try. But after reading this one, I will never try 'contemporary romance' again. It's funny, well-written most of the time, plot gooey and rather predictable. I enjoyed parts of it, but I really don't want to venture into this territory again. But I did actually finish it, which was touch and go for a time. 3.5 stars from me but I think it's probably better if you like the genre. ( )
