Being the famed cartoonist's graphic work to illustrate musical recording packages and promotional materials. About half of the works are done in the classic Crumb 'tooning style, and the remainder are more straightforward portrait illustrations. Despite Crumb's usual association with Baby Boomer youth culture, almost none of these illustrate rock music, rather they are devoted to Crumb's beloved roots music, and he conveys his enthusiasm effectively. As art work, this is enjoyable, but the limited scope of the collection leaves little space for Crumb's always interesting musings on the human condition. The collection's other fault is in being a trifle over-inclusive, as such minutiae as his lettering for playlists and such are included and will be of interest only to total obsessives. ( )

It's nice to have these all together. The 12" LP originals are better, but the European issues and small labels are hard to find. The Barrelhouse LPs are quite expensive. Well done and reasonably priced. ( )
