I really liked this as there was a detailed explanation of the character of Muller at the start of the novel which set the scene. I liked how the character was flawed but believable as such. Even though it is set in the late 19th century in Austria, it was very readable. Muller is dragged by the police sergeant Horn to investigate a gentleman who has locked himself in his room and wont open the door to his valet. When the valet, Horn and Muller break down the door, they find he has been shot in the chest by a golden bullet, and yet the door is locked from the inside. The dead man leaves a note on the desk suggesting that he feared for his life and was about to leave the country. What links this case to a previous one of Muller's where a wealthy socialite had flung herself from a balcony? Can Muller uncover the connection from the tiniest clues. Short, to the point, readable language. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

"Please, sir, there is a man outside who asks to see you." "What does he want?" asked Commissioner Horn, looking up. "He says he has something to report, sir." "Send him in, then." The attendant disappeared, and the commissioner looked up at the clock. It was just striking eleven, but the fellow official who was to relieve him at that hour had not yet appeared. And if this should chance to be a new case, he would probably be obliged to take it himself. The commissioner was not in a very good humour as he sat back to receive the young man who entered the room in the wake of the attendant. The stranger was a sturdy youth, with an unintelligent, goodnatured face. He twisted his soft hat in his hands in evident embarrassment, and his eyes wandered helplessly about the great bare room. "Who are you?" demanded the commissioner. ...] Reprint of the detective novel starring Joseph Muller, Secret Service detective of the Imperial Austrian police.
