Typically of Britain, the Festival was organised on a shoe-string and much against the wishes of the Conservative opposition, which had been ousted by a new Labour Government. Indeed, the Tories were so against the Festival that, when they returned to power, they refused every attempt to have the year long event extended, despite its great success! I really do not think that it is an exaggeration to say that, without the Festival of Britain, the swinging sixties would not have swung! This may strike you, good reader, as a disaster, or a good thing, depending upon how keen you are/were on letting your hair down! One thing is, however, certain: the sixties heralded a return to Britain leading the world - albeit only temporarily and our current lifestyle would be very different had they not occurred.
It is curious, therefore, that the text to this book is rather dry. It contains much information of which I was previously unaware and gives the best description of the site that I have seen but, for me, it fails to conjure up the joie de vivre of the Festival. Thank goodness for the copious photographs and illustrations which, although almost exclusively in black and white (Britain took its time getting into this new fangle colour photography too!), lifts the book into an important documentary record.
