Fantasy. Fiction. Science Fiction. "McCarthy's delirious narrative avoids cliché and raises intriguing questions about what it means to be human.". HTML:

Germline (n): the genetic material contained in a cellular lineage that can be passed to the next generation. Also (slang): secret military program to develop genetically engineered supersoldiers.

One hundred years from now, Russia and the United States are at odds again. This time the war has gone hot. Heavily armored soldiers battle genetically engineered troops hundreds of meters below the icy, mineral-rich mountains of Kazakhstan.

War is Oscar Wendell's ticket to greatness. A reporter for the Stars and Stripes, he has the only one-way ticket to the front lines. The front smells of blood and fire and deathâ??it smells like a Pulitzer.

But Kaz changes people, and the chaos of war feels a bit too much like home. Hooked on a dangerous cocktail of drugs and adrenaline, Oscar starts down a dark road that he won't be able to turn back from.… (plus d'informations)

    Armor par John Steakley (knownever)
knownever: Both have world-weary, fatalistic protagonists who sometimes tip over into action movie stereotype. If you liked Germline, Armor's greater emotional depth will draw you even deeper into a similar world.
  2. 00
Zone de guerre par Dan Abnett (knownever)
knownever: both are about over the hill embedded journalists who end up on their own in a combat zone. Embedded is slightly more thoughtfully drawn while Germline has more relentless action.

10 word review: intense PTSD-laden yet touching story of war, camaraderie, and luck ( )

I got through 38% of this book and then just gave up in despair. It never got better.

If you like a reject of a human who can't be a responsible adult OD'ing on drugs and describing in detail his vomiting/withdrawal sessions, then you have got to read this book. ( )

It is a military sci-fi that doesn't include weapon-porn (so we are not subjected to what size rounds fit in which type of gun, nor how many revolutions ammunition might make in a gun barrel, or the armour penetration per inch by weapon type, etc). I like military sci-fi that doesn't include gun/military enthusiasts' fantasies, so this book fit the bill for me.

Sure, some of the military stuff was glossed over, and some of the sci-fi was glossed over... and really, it wasn't all that sci-fi-y. It's almost like a straight up "look, I survived an atrocious war even though I came out scarred" novel.

The main character isn't a soldier. And that means we get to see a very long war from an alternative point of view. I also think it allowed Wendall to be better written, and more humanized than he would have been if he was a proper soldier. i.e. there was no real harm in him being high as a kite in the midst of battle since he wasn't really supposed to be there anyway.

The story is actually one of growth and maturity and not really about war at all. It's the maturation of one man - because of, or in spite of, a horrendous war background. There is some (not overly moralistic) message about how war scars people psychologically, and how our veterans may not receive the respect and help they require after returning... particularly in circumstances where the "war" has slipped from the front page. could easily be a movie - quick read full of action - gave it to a friend of mine immediately

This is a harsh story -- in a good way. There is no sugar-coating the reality of war. The main character is a bit of an asshole, but I don't think the author would deny that. Good read. ( )

"A tour de force" that "does not glamorize war...survival is all that matters." (spoilers)

"McCarthy delves into the darker parts of the psyche of soldiers trapped in a conflict that has no end in sight and doesn’t flinch"

"If there’s one thing that’s going to happen to Germline, it’s going to be a hit...this is going to be big"

"McCarthy’s real life experience with the CIA and in the bio-tech field lend Germline a solid and realistic nature. Nothing seems implausible (one can pick up not so subtle comparisons to the modern day thirst for oil) which makes the story all that much more powerful" Matt also had this to add regarding use of his review on LibraryThing: "I'd certainly give Germline a Thumbs Up. It's solid, fast paced, and a good tale. I really enjoyed it."

Germline named as one of PW's Top 10 SF, Fantasy and Horror Books for Fall 2011
