Ezra is rarely if ever preached on. Haggai gets even shorter shrift: if anything, Haggai 1 is pressed into service to encourage a reluctant congregation to give to an ailing fabric fund. But the message of these books, and their emphasis on building for God and the need of obedience to his Word and openness to his Spirit, is one which needs to be heard clearly today. This commentary by Robert Fyall highlights the contemporary parallels of the challenges Israel faced to those of today's church and demonstrates the relevance of the books of Ezra and Haggai for God's people in all times. With passage-by-passage exposition of the biblical text, this resource will be helpful for pastors, teachers and anyone who wants to dive deeper into these seldom discussed Old Testament books.

Fyall's foremost goal in The Message of Ezra & Haggai is to convey a faithful understanding of God's purposes and God's people (p. 17). He accomplishes this broad goal successfully through a systematic study of the historical/religious events recorded in Ezra and Haggai and their corresponding spiritual significance. Though Fyalls purpose is not ground-breaking scholarship, this study does contribute significantly to the discussion about how the spiritual messages of the ancient books apply to the modern Christian.

[General Preface] The Bible Speaks Today describes three series of expositions, based on the books of the Old and New Testaments, and on Bible themes that run throughout the whole of Scripture.

[Author's Preface] For many years now The Bible Speaks Today series, with its blend of careful exegesis and relevant exposition, has proved to be of immense help to Bible students and teachers and I was delighted to asked to contribute to the volume on Ezra and Haggai.

[Introduction] Henry Ford famously said the 'History is more or less bunk'.

Visiting a show house is always an enjoyable experience and the smell of new wood, gleaming surfaces and fresh carpets invites us to new and exciting possibilities.
