Fiction. Literature. HTML:

In this deeply moving and wonderfully insightful novel, acclaimed author Cathy Lamb explores what can happen when one woman decides to reclaim her past-and her future-no matter where they lead...

Madeline O'Shea tells people what to do with their lives. A renowned life coach, she inspires thousands of women through her thriving practice-exuding enviable confidence along with her stylish suits and sleek hair. But her confidence, just like her fashionable demeanor, is all a front.

For decades, Madeline has lived in fear of her traumatic past becoming public. Now a reporter is reinvestigating the notorious crime that put Madeline's mother behind bars, threatening to destroy her elaborate façade. Only Madeline's sister, Annie, and their frail grandparents know about her childhoodâ??but lately Madeline has reason to wonder if her grandparents also have a history they've been keeping from her.

As the demons of the past swirl around her, a tough, handsome judge with a gentle heart is urging Madeline to have faith in him-and in herself. And as she allows her resistance to thaw, the pain she expects pales in comparison to the surprises headed straight to her door. With one bold, unprecedented move, Madeline O'Shea may just wake up out of the sadness and guilt that have kept her sleepwalking through life for so long-and discover that the worst thing that can happen is sometimes the very thing we desperately need.

The First Day of the Rest of My Life is an eloquent and triumphant tale of a fierce act of love, a family's legacy, and one woman's awakening to her own power-with no secrets.... .… (plus d'informations)

This is the story of sisters Madeline and Annie who were abused as children by a stepfather and his friends. They are now adults with successful careers but still carrying emotional and psychological scars. The anniversary of the abuse trials is approaching, and a reporter is planning to write and story. In addition, the sisters are being blackmailed by someone who has pornographic photos of them. And their grandparents, who raised them, seem to be keeping major secrets of their own. The sisters are struggling to figure out what's going on, and how to regain control of their lives.

This book was a strange mixture of laugh-out-loud, almost slapstick, funny at times. And so very tragic at others. The humour didn't always work, such as the prosecuting attorney's reaction to the girls' mother at her trial. It was just juvenile.

The characters were pretty well developed, although the plot kept hinting at things without resolution a bit too long for me. I found some aspects too fairy-tale like: Steven's unending love for Madeline; the reunion with their uncle and his family for example. And, the book includes a rant against child pornography, which is not in tune with the character's voice and seems like the author's personal view. That's not okay. ( )

I read this book a few years ago and realize I never reviewed it! Although it has been a while since I read it, the story was funny, heartwarming, and sad... as Cathy's novels usually are.

She somehow knows how to make us laugh, even when the story is sad. And the importance of family always resonates in her stories, reminding us what is really important in life. ( )

Didn't enjoy her writing. Story was okay but descriptions and choice of words weird. I picked it up because she is a local author, really dissipointed but I did finish it. ( )

What a beautifully written book. It broke my heart, it made me sad and it made me smile. I loved all the characters and felt very deeply for them. This book had elements I didn't expect. I loved that Annie went on trips to "Fiji" and that Madeline had glitter thrown on her all the time even though she asked the client not to do it. But I loved the strength of the characters, the strong women, the family love. LOVED the Grandma. Cathy Lamb did a great job of bringing out the quirky in everyone and showed how a community can get around a family and become a family through love and loyalty. This is a great book that I shed tears of joy and tears of heartache over. I definitely recommend this book. ( )

I wasn't really sure what to expect out of this novel when I picked it up, but I couldn't put it down. Cathy Lamb is a fantastic story teller. This novel is so dark and graphic you can't help but feel empathy for each of the characters. It is also very scary. It is not scary in a horror sense, but scary in there are some sick people in this world that do some very bad things. I would compare her writing to Kate Morton. There are so many secrets with twists and turns that some things you just wouldn't see coming. I am looking forward to reading more of her books. ( )
