While this book does have a section at the back about how to put on a kimono, a yukata, and how to tie obi, it is not really a 'beginners guide to kimono'. Nor is it really about the history of the kimono. Rather it is a look at kimono and how it is being worn as a contemporary garment today. And because of that it stands out from a lot of books about kimono you will find in English. A recent trip to Japan highlighted how a lot of young people - men as well as women - are starting to wear the kimono again, and for occassions other than the 'traditional, formal' ones you would expect. And many of these new kimono wearers are shaking things up and creating outfits that are not just about tradition, but modern fashion as well.

I only wish I lived in Japan and could take to wearing kimono myself! ( )
