The concept behind the story is great. I enjoyed the journey of the main character …that is until the ending. I thought the ending while something I would never have guessed just wasn't to my liking. It wasn't bad but just didn't set well with me. I still enjoyed the journey and feel it was overall a solid read. ( )

The thing about Fated, I really loved the voice. It was so distinctly S.G. Browne. I’ve read every one of his novels, and his story telling is so distinct. I wouldn’t so much classify it as humor. It’s more light-hearted. It’s got a nice flow to it. Normally, the use of present tense in story telling irritates the hell out of me. I find it to be a major pet peeve, but with Browne, I hardly even notice it.

But enough about the writing. Let’s get into the story. The concept behind the story is really cool. The main character, Fabio, is Fate, one of the host of immortals in this novel. Other immortals include Sloth, Gluttony, Greed, Destiny, Truth, and of course, there is Jerry, who is God. Each of the immortals has a job to do. Fabio assigns the fate to most human beings, and often has to reassign it because of the stupid choices that the humans under his umbrella make. All of that changes when he meets Sara, a human he falls in love with. Then he gets soft and starts trying to help the humans—a bad mistake as it turns out since Jerry is non too happy when the humans’ lives change, and not necessarily for the better. He knows that being with Sara could get him into serious hot water, but he can’t help himself. Love is love, after all.

I really enjoyed this story. The one negative was the ending. It didn’t work for me and I didn’t find it to be very believable. If the ending had been good, this would have been an easy five star rating, but I had to take it down a notch as a result. Still, this is well worth reading.

This book was amazing. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it kept me up until 1am and then I couldn't wait to finish it today. It's like Tyler Durden from Fight Club joins the cast of Dead Like Me, but with more feeling and depth. It's laugh out loud funny at parts and sad in an oddly comforting way. ( )

Das personifizierte Schicksal hat die Schnauze voll. Er hat es satt zusehen zu müssen, wie seine ihm zugewiesenen Menschen Tag für Tag falsche Entscheidungen treffen und somit ihr Schicksal verschlimmern. Er will nicht mehr tatenlos zusehen, wie sie in ihr eigenes Unglück rennen. Das hat er jetzt schon seit Anbeginn der Zeit getan. Doch Einmischung ist ihm und allen anderen Tugenden/ Untugenden/ Todsünden, Gefühlen etc. strengstens verboten. Dass er sich dann auch noch in eine Sterbliche verliebt, macht die Situation nicht einfacher.
Doch Schicksal lässt sich nicht beirren und beginnt den Menschen zu helfen und eine Beziehung mit Sara einzugehen, die jedoch für etwas ganz anderes bestimmt ist.

Es wimmelt nur so von personifizierten Etwassen, die von Jerry (Gott) erschaffen worden sind und nun unter seiner allwissenden Kontrolle stehen.
Und um es auf den Punkt zu bringen: Jeder von ihnen besitzt eine Eigenschaft, auf die er oder sie nun das gesamte Buch reduziert wird. Hat man sich erstmal daran gewöhnt, verläuft die eigentliche Story ganz mau.
Frustriertes Schicksal bricht so ziemlich jede Regel, bringt den Weltenlauf durcheinander und wird teilweise zu unrecht angeklagt und muss fortan mit allen Konsequenzen leben.

Sich durch vierhundert Seiten zu plagen, in dem eine neue Wesenheit nach der anderen vorgestellt wird, die lediglich auf ihren Job reduziert wird, der ihr zugewiesen worden ist (Bestimmung, Lust, Wahrheit, Tod, Völlerei etc) und die eigentliche Charakterisierung nur bei Schicksal, oder auch Sergio genannt, stattfindet, ist eine Zumutung für den leserlichen Nerv. Das Buch beginnt eintönig und als man sich dann endlich eingefuchst hat und die Geschichte ein bisschen Fahrt aufnimmt, zerstört spätestens das Ende jegliche emotionale (positive) Bindung, die man als Leser versucht hat aufzubauen.

Vom Stil ist nicht viel auszusetzen, außer das der Autor als stilistisches Mittel zur „Charakterisierung“ der Wesenheiten immer wieder denselben Satz verwendet, der beim Leser irgendwann nur noch ein genervtes Aufstöhnen hervorruft. Jeder sollte allerdings seine eigenen Erfahrungen machen, dies ist nur meine subjektive Meinung als Leser. ( )

Fate, also known as Fabio, is bored with his job. It seems like humans always make decisions that change their path for the worse and all he can do is observe over and over again as people destroy their life. But then he starts to break the rules. First, he falls in love with a mortal then after accidentally influencing the outcome of a human's path he decides that rules or no rules, he needs to make a difference in his humans lives. But he is not going to be able to keep his transgressions secret for long. I thought that this book was OK, it was hard for me to like any of the characters. I think that the humor did not speak to me. It seemed like it was trying to go for the kind of humor that Moore was successful with in Lamb, but it fell short for me. However I am a sucker for books with personifications of immortal concepts and there were times that the authors musings on the differences between Fate and Destiny and what it means to be human were interesting enough to bump up the rating half a star.
