Katie Kendall knew about making two beings operate as one ~ she participated in two-in-hand combined driving competitions. If she could control two horses in the same harness, then surely two cowboys in the same relationship would be a piece of cake. Right?
Daniel Westin had loved Katie when they were both teenagers and confusion over his changing sexuality made him leave her. When he met team roper and stock contractor, James Stanton, Daniel realized his romantic dreams had been realized. Except for one thing, Katie was missing out of their lives.
So Daniel invites Katie to a rodeo. Perhaps, if she sees how good he and James work together, she’ll remember how good things were between them. And maybe, just maybe, Daniel and James can convince Katie that she can handle them.
BOOK REVIEW:
While the blurb does say that part of the story is about two cowboys trying to woo carriage driving Katie, the opening paragraph ~ which is what caught my eye ~ very much gives the impression that she's the person in control. Indeed, throughout the story, we were constantly told how strong and independent Katie is.
Unfortunately, every time the author switched to let us see inside Katie's mind and heart, that went out of the window ~ she's been pining over her high-school sweetheart for years and now he's back with his boyfriend, it's all about how can she resist the double whammy of love and lust they've hit her with. This is why I don't read a lot of het romance, and believe me, the addition of two hot cowboys doesn't make me like it any better.
The story does have its moments, though: the date scenes juxtaposing the two very different horse cultures, first when the cowboys are competing, and then when Katie is, are fun and the emotional and physical elements of the sex scenes are woven together skillfully. Jamie and Dan are a great couple, and their interaction, in and out of bed, was good to see, but as a ménage story, I just couldn't get past my reactions to Katie.
The writing itself is let down by some editing failure's ~ the errors weren't frequent, but they were absolutely deadly.
For example, Katie drives two-in-hand. This is significant ~ we see her compete, they draw attention to the parallel between two men and two horses in the blurb, and explicitly and implicitly throughout the book. However, just at the critical emotional moment where Katie finally commits to the relationship we suddenly get reference to four-in-hand, which completely threw me out of the scene at the exact moment I should have been most invested. (Also, I can see why the author might want to vary the language after paragraphs full of 'pussy', but 'her other anus' is an eye-watering choice.)
I suspect if you enjoy traditional het-romance, of the uber-masculine yet emotionally literate hero, rescues heroine from successful but lonely life type, there's a lot here you might enjoy. However, that's a flavor of romance that I really don't enjoy, not even when there are two heroes to do the rescuing.
