A nice sequel to a book that really helped to change and broaden the definition of what a book is and can be. Personally I preferred the first, but I would never turn down a chance to read more about the lives of Holly and her friends. It's definitely chick lit, and that's what make the format so perfect as an exploration of modern office life. Or you can just read it for the Yuks, as they come on most every page.

Unlike a book like Bridget jones,I found mylsef liking her friends even more than Holly. If Ms. den ham is reading this, consider it a groveling beg for a Patricia's diary spinoff! ;-) ( )

Holly and her friends are back for this entertaining follow-up to Holly’s Inbox. Told entirely in emails and text messages, the reader gets a glimpse into both Holly’s professional and personal life.

Life seems to be pretty good for Holly at the start of the book. Work is work… the usual responsibilities of scheduling rooms, showing clients where to go and providing excellent customer service. Her love life is at a high too. She’s living with her boyfriend and is thinking about what the future holds for them.

Gradually things change. Work becomes a bit more challenging when Holly has a slight falling out with a co-worker. If that’s not enough, her live-in boyfriend is spending weekends alone without her. And Holly believes he’s cheating on her… after all, what else could it possibly be?

If you’re looking to escape your overflowing inbox, then I recommend Holly’s Inbox: Scandal in the City. Don’t allow the 525 pages to scare you away. It’s a quick and easy read. Before you know it, your unanswered emails will be long forgotten as you find yourself engrossed in Holly’s life. ( )

In much the same style as Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary, Holly is a bit of a character who always seems to be getting herself into some trouble. Her letters to her best friend Jason, felt fun and whimsical, and topped my list for emails I most wanted to read. Jason was sweet and caring, but a real crack up most of the time, mocking Holly for her insecurities and egging her on to push her relationship with Toby a bit farther. This relationship aside, I couldn't help but wonder if people really do send as many short, even one-liner emails, as these characters do? I can't imagine spending my day shooting short emails back and forth to people, but maybe that saves their sanity at a desk job?

The story was funny to read, and although it was predictable with its conflict and resolution, I still found myself eager to see how it came together. As I mentioned in my previous review of Holly's Inbox, there is a risk in sticking strictly to the written communications without any commentary by the author. It was easy to sense where things were going, but the author did still manage to throw in a few surprising twists. I think I enjoyed this second installment a bit more than the first, possibly because the tension in the story came up a little earlier and had me flipping pages for the resolution. Holly could be a bit of an acquired taste for some readers; she is quirky, anxious, and a bit insecure, which strangely annoyed me and made her more likable. Although not perfect, it is a fun read that breaks out of the norm and helped me escape for an evening! ( )

Life seems to be looking up for Holly Denham. Her adorable boyfriend, Toby, is suave and attentive; her receptionist position at a high-powered bank in London keeps her busy while also providing ample opportunity to socialize. But when Holly (finally!) earns a promotion, there’s someone eager to tear her down: Tanya, a snobby fellow manager with her sights set on Toby. And she’s ready to tackle Holly’s confidence to the ground just when her other relationships become tenuous. Can she hold strong?

Through a series of daily emails, Holly’s Inbox: Scandal In The City — the sequel to the highly entertaining Holly’s Inbox – reveals far more about a group of characters than you’d expect from a tome filled with only electronic correspondence. Holly is as charmingly disheveled as ever, though trying to put a hold on her partying ways long enough to earn some clout with her employers.

This series’ charm comes through its ability to tap into that voyeuristic side in all of us. If a coworker you may or may not like stepped away from their desk, leaving Outlook or Gmail open in full view, would you be able to resist the siren call of snooping? I’d like to think I could, but who knows. That same urge to sift through someone’s medicine cabinet, book collection or purse is what makes Holly’s Inbox so compelling.

Unfortunately, what worked so well for me in the original lost a bit of its luster in the sequel. Reading Holly’s emails in the first novel felt like a fresh endeavor, but here? Well, I feel like I’ve read it all before. My curiosity was satisfied. Favorite characters like well-meaning best friends Jason and Aisha have returned, along with fellow receptionist Trisha, but newcomers like Tanya felt less like real people and more like archetypical “villains” — and people I wouldn’t actually know. Plus, the juxtaposition of Holly advancing in her career while still acting ridiculous in her personal life — drinking herself into oblivion; generally acting like a debauched teenager — didn’t quite add up for me. If she’s such a dynamo on the job, how can she be such a screw-up on her own time?

Maybe that’s not unusual. Maybe I’m expecting a little too much from a fun, light-hearted read. I didn’t consume this one as quickly as I did the first, and found myself less enthused at Holly as a character than I once was. Still, fans of British chick lit who also enjoy the epistolary style will probably enjoy Holly’s misadventures. If you’re new to the Denham books, I’d recommend starting at the beginning — and then maybe we’ll decide our girl isn’t beyond redemption after all. ( )

I read Holly's Inbox by Holly Denham just a short time ago and I really loved it so it was no surprise that I felt the same about this installment of Holly's life. The book is again told through email format which I find delightfully sinful! Holly's life is both fun and complicated. She seems to have it all together in the beginning of the book with a new job promotion and a great boyfriend, but as Holly's life goes we know it won't be that way for long. Chaos soon rears it's ugly head and life for Holly takes an ugly turn. All of Holly's old friends are back and a few new ones emerge too. This book was one I couldn't put down. I found myself reading at the stove cooking dinner. The book looks like a chunkster with over 500 pages but the emails read fast and one could easily polish this book off in a day. Once you get wrapped up in Holly's hilarious antics you won't want to put it down. As with the other book, I found myself laughing out loud. I only hope we will be blessed with more installments Of Holly's crazy life. I want more! As the book ended I could only imagine where Holly's life will go next. This book could stand alone but I highly recommend reading both books. You don't want to miss a moment of Holly's crazy life! ( )
