This book was written in 1951, so is probably more than a little out of date in some ways, but I thoroughly enjoyed Lady Stanton's use of contemporary sources to illustrate her arguments and give some context to her examination of English society during the eleventh through thirteenth centuries. In the middle of the century the baronage, in revolt against a king who leaned too strongly on foreign clerks and rewarded too richly his foreign kinsfolk, reiterated their determination that castles shall not be entrusted to the care of aliens and that English heiresses shall not be married where they are disparaged 'that is, to men not of the nation of the realm of England.'
