This is the true story of an ex - traordinary boy, the son of a white plantation owner and a black slave, who overcame prejudice to become one of the finest classical musicians in all of Europe.

I have decided to give this biography a 3 star, only because it just kind of bored me. I think the overall story of his life is wonderful, and it was super cool to see a different perspective of "slavery". This man was half white and half black, super rich, and yet was still looked down upon and called a "mullato". I think its great the he was able to have an amazing life because of his wealth, but still ashame to see how rooted racism is in american and even worldy culture. I was just a little bored because unlike the other picture books i'm reading, this one is just very simple, plain, and straight to the point. I think it is for older elementary kids rather than the younger ones, because I think with how long each page is they might really lose interest before we finished the book. ( )

Joseph was born to a black slave and a rich white man. He did not have to work as a slave because he was half white. They moved to France after his mother was freed from slavery. There Joseph pursued music. Though Joseph was half white he was still discriminated against for being a "mulatto." He defied all odds and became the First Violin in the Orchestra. Mozart attended one of his shows and was actually inspired by him, though they never met. He continued to amaze people with his talents and played for the King and Queen of France. I like how this story uses the word mulatto to describe Joseph. It offers the chance to teach readers about the different terms that described someone's mixed relations. It also showed how these people sometimes had different experiences but were often still discriminated against. ( )

Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint George was born the son of a slave woman and her master. Although his father doted on him, he could not take his father's name because he had slave blood. Out of everything he loved, he loved music best. He became a master of the violin, being that when his family traveled to France, he was the first black allowed in the Royal residence of king Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. Amadeus Mozart not only came to hear him play, but also became his musical partner. ( )

People treated him differently. Many other Caucasian children made fun of him because he was mixed.Joseph soon became a good violinists and played for the king and queen of France. Joseph also created deux symphonies concertantes. Joseph enjoyed playing his violin and his talent was always heard.

Joseph is significant because he was the first black violinist to be invited to play for the king and queen from France. Joseph was the first black man invited to play at the palace.Joseph ignored the judgement from others and continued his dream of playing the violin.

The organization of this book begins from Joseph's birth to his death. It is a well organized read and does not lead to any confusion. ( )
