Gilles Montroville is like any other bored teenager: He's tired of school, doesn't want to go into the family business, and he's tired of people telling him what to do. Rebellion is not an option. Life in France in the Year of Our Lord 1640 is difficult under any circumstances but especially for those who have fallen from favor with the all-powerful church and the guardians of that power. The King and Cardinal Richelieu oversee a network of priests who set snares for the Huguenots, those not following closely enough to the official interpretation of Catholicism. Wealthy citizens are in danger, too, as they are often accused of heresy for the purpose of seizing their land to pay for the costly ongoing war. Young Gilles cares nothing about politics or religion, but a glimpse into another world, a world of complete freedom and exotic strangers, leaves him wanting more from his life. He attempts to live the life that his parents have planned out for him but a sudden turn of events launches him into a world far away from his protected childhood and provincial home, a world that he could never have even imagined.… (plus d'informations)
What interest does a spoiled 17th century French teenager have in politics or state religion? Usually none, until he loses everything and has to find a way to survive with new allies as a stranger in a strange new land. ( )
Dreams either flourish far and ahead of what one hopes for, or falter out as expected. "The Fires of Europe" is the tale of Gilles Montroville, a heir to a well to do business in seventeenth century France. Looking into his future and not liking what he sees, he dreams of a new life in a new world. Trying to live up to his parents expectations, he may just get what he wants, but what he wants may not be what he truly wanted. "The Fires of Europe" is an enticing read that should not be ignored.

Gilles often had the feeling that he was the only one in the room that did not have his marriage to Marie Junot all planned out.
“Did you say that the Marranos were Spanish Jews?” “Often they are Jews but not always. They could be anyone who is newly converted to follow the Catholic Church. They could be Muslims, Moors, even former Protestants, I suppose. Sometimes the conversion isn’t dramatic enough and the Spanish torturers test their faith. Sometimes the Marranos live, sometimes they die, and sometimes they escape and come here. Isn’t it true that you torture people in France too?” There was no hint of malice or accusation. She stated it as though it was a simple fact that everyone knew. Gilles said nothing for a moment. France was nothing at all like Spain and he took offense at the comparison. He didn’t want to think about the Church right now...
Gilles turned around to leave right away but then he found himself facing another man, a man whose face he never had the time to see, a man who hit him with a heavy blow to the head that immediately took Gilles down to his knees. He held his arms up over his head and tried to regain his feet but the blows kept coming to his head and then to his stomach where someone’s foot was connecting with it. The blows seemed to hurt less eventually and his last thoughts were of the rain coming down harder, hitting him too, along with the men, and sorrow, sorrow that his father would never know what had happened to him.
