Description :
In 1847, the Dayton Library opened with a total of 6,000 volumes. The library was housed for many years in the Steele Building. In 1888, a Gothic-style library building was opened in Cooper Park near Second Street. A natural history museum was opened on the library's second floor in 1893 where it remained until 1921 when it moved to its own space (and is now the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery). The first Children's Room was opened in 1897. The first branch libraries were opened in 1914, and Book Wagon service began in 1923.

The Dayton Library survived the flood of 1913, the Depression, and the war years. In 1962 the collections were moved into the current Main Library building and the old, castle-like building was demolished. The library's first Audio-Visual department opened in 1973. Computers came to the library in 1984 with the first computerized check out. By 1991 the card catalog was being replaced by Public Access Catalog computer terminals, and in 1996 the first Internet access was made available to the public.

Our history is rich with innovation, information and public service. Our steady presence over the years is due to countless dedicated employees, trustees and Friends, and the support of our community.
