Torn Away
Born and raised in the Midwest, Jersey Cameron knows all about tornadoes. So many watches, you barely even notice; so many warnings, you hardly bother to take cover. Serious tornadoes are rare. And the chances of being caught up in one, even in Missouri, are slim. Or so Jersey thinks. When her town is devastated by a tornado, Jersey survives -- but loses her mother, her young sister, and her home. As Jersey struggles to overcome her grief, she's abandoned by her stepfather, as well -- forced to find a new home, first with her biological father, then with her estranged grandparents. When another storm rolls through town, triggering the tornado sirens, it's more than Jersey can take. She panics and turns on her grandmother, unleashing the anger and pain that's been building up inside of her. What surprises Jersey is her grandmother's reaction -- she still cares. Her grandfather still invites her to play cards with him. Slowly, Jersey pieces together a picture of a reality that she'd never before considered -- one where her mother wasn't perfect, and neither were her grandparents, but they all loved her just the same. Together, Jersey and her grandparents create a new definition of family. Something no tornado can touch.
