Tami Hoag was born on January 20, 1959, in Cresco, Iowa. Her first novel, The Trouble with J. J., was published in 1988. Her other works include Night Sins, Guilty as Sin, The Alibi Man, Prior Bad Acts, Dark Horse, Kill the Messenger, Deeper Than the Dead, Secrets to the Grave, Down the Darkest afficher plus Road, Cold Cold Heart, the Bitter Season, and The Boy. She is a past recipient of the Career Achievement Award from the Romantic Times. The bad: The first chapter of this book made me wince. It's filled with sing-song sentences like "They moved together, slowly and gently, then with strength and passion." The intent is to introduce the main characters and their relationships, but I felt like I was reading A.I. fiction.
The good: Starting with chapter 2, the standard police procedural starts with the discovery of an unidentified body found on a back road and, in general, keeps a steady and interesting story going as the "good" police figure out who the "bad" police and killer(s) are.
I don't know if it was meant, but I found the "minor" characters to written with more nuance than the "major" ones -- probably because the general tenor of the story is about the darkness inside the people who present themselves as "the good guys" -- except for the detectives in the case who we are suppose to believe are "the good guys" without irony. Overall this was an enjoyable "beach read" kind of book with good pacing and an interesting puzzle.… (plus d'informations)
