I came for the smut, I stayed for the developing romance and got fascinated by the psychological insights.

Honestly I was not expecting that!
In the beginning it reads rather blunt. Guy and girl, some stereotypes seem to be dished up... until you start to not just skim the pages to get to the next spicy part but you actually want to read every. single. word. because you want to know. And then you can't put it down because the thought of the protagonist explains more about yourself than you ever wanted to find out in a book you bought for the smut!

Trademark McKenna HOT, nails emotions, and takes place in a setting definitely not often found in contemp romance.

Never pass-up a McKenna book if you can.

Rounding up but I am waffling between 3 and 4 stars because I loved a lot of this book and I really appreciate how the story was told (through text messages) but there were still quite a few bumps that ended up being rather large misses for me. This reminded of Stein's book, The Professor, which I loved when I first read it. It was also epistolary however not as much of the story was told through messages as Way Down Deep is.

The main issue for me: I was titillated but also often bored - the story being told completely thru messages actually made me long for moments outside the messages where we are with the actual characters' thoughts not just their shared words.… (plus d'informations)

Taboo prison inmate/county-librarian-who-works-one-day-a-week-at-the-prison/epistolary romance. So yes this is taboo and a lot of the first several chapters of the book deal with this tension. I had some frustration with how Annie was just not able to recognize her privilege - she came from a white, "stable" middle-class home - so she would just refuse to empathize with Eric on many issues. But, I think the romance element of the book was excellent.
