> FEUILLES D'HERBE (1855) de Walt Whitman. — On croyait connaître ce livre fleuve, ou plutôt océan, de Walt Whitman grâce notamment à la traduction qu'en avait donnée Jacques Darras (Grasset, 1989 et 1994, puis Poésie-Gallimard, 2002). Mais on n'avait pas prêté une attention suffisante à l'histoire de ce grand dialogue, comme d'égal à égal, entre le poète et la jeune Amérique. L'oeuvre fut en fait maintes fois remaniée et augmentée, polie par l'auteur : pas moins de huit éditions jusqu'à celle dite "du lit de mort" (1891-1892).
L'édition bilingue que propose Eric Athenot est la première, celle de 1855, tirée à moins de mille exemplaires sans nom d'auteur. La préface, étonnante, est déjà là, mais le texte et la présentation des poèmes sont différents. Comme l'explique avec rigueur et enthousiasme Eric Athenot, Whitman a d'abord cherché une "convergence physique entre auteur, texte et lecteur". Puis, cela a été en s'amenuisant. Les lecteurs des Feuilles d'herbe tireront grand profit de cette belle lecture. Traduit de l'anglais (Etats-Unis) et postfacé par Eric Athenot, éd. José Corti, 338 p., 19 €.
