Did he really have a coughing fit rendering him unconscious or was it an act of revenge? The story is spellbinding presenting insight into courtroom machinations, trauma and memory and the author is [a:Helen Garner|332165|Helen Garner|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1332565089p2/332165.jpg], my new favorite writer. My new favorite author is [a:Helen Garner|332165|Helen Garner|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1332565089p2/332165.jpg]. [b:The Children's Bach|83817408|The Children's Bach|Helen Garner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1684815445l/83817408._SY75_.jpg|2810409] is an antipodean (a chance to use that word!) domestic novel of parents and children, friends and lovers, siblings and spouses, beautifully written, loosely structured, not long but an honest examination of the social freedoms of the eighties with musical references. Effort is required to keep track of the eight major characters. It's a good companion read to [b:The Spare Room|3014272|The Spare Room|Helen Garner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1347763965l/3014272._SY75_.jpg|3044813] which covers friendship and concerns about mortality at a later stage in life.… (plus d'informations)

Only just discovered this Australian essayist, film critic and novelist (and who knows what other -ist) but I immediately ordered 3 copies as gifts just for "The Insults of Age." Best described by Garner herself: "Really, it is astonishing how much shit a woman will cop in the interests of civic and domestic order." She also writes of Antipodean authors I'd forgotten such as Jolley, Winton, Janet Malcolm, plus a piece on Russell Crowe. She discusses with insight and a magnetic offhandedness ballet, death, dogs, abortion, mothers, grandkids, an ogre teacher, houses, and criminal trials. A treasure.… (plus d'informations)

I started with [a:Helen Garner|332165|Helen Garner|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1332565089p2/332165.jpg] [b:Everywhere I Look|28818628|Everywhere I Look|Helen Garner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1455172355l/28818628._SY75_.jpg|49036034] and read Claire Fuller's review which is hard to top. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3253836375?book_show_action=false&from... I was also reminded of the plot of the [a:Sigrid Nunez|6633|Sigrid Nunez|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1529285691p2/6633.jpg] [b:What Are You Going Through|51152434|What Are You Going Through|Sigrid Nunez|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1585361945l/51152434._SY75_.jpg|74855144] about friendships under strain. Engrossing story and a refreshing Australian setting.… (plus d'informations)
