Courte biographie
Gertrude Demain Hammond (1862-1952) was a British painter and book illustrator. Born in Brixton, London, she was the daughter of a banker's clerk, and was one of three children. Her sister, Christine Demain Hammond, was a pen illustrator, and her brother, Percy Edward Demain Hammond, was a stained-glass artist. Educated at the Lambeth School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, she worked as an illustrator for periodical and book publishing, and exhibited her paintings at the Royal Academy and at Suffolk Street (The Royal Society of British Artists). She sometimes signed her work "G. Demain Hammond," as she experienced discrimination in commissions, as a result of her sex. In 1898 Hammond married Henry McMurdie, but continued to use her unmarried name in her work. She died in 1952.
