This is more than just a handbook; it's an inspiration. These pages are chock-full of great advice and interviews for the aspiring guy writer, mixed together with a healthy dose of validation and encouragement. Fletcher simply assumes that most boys write, even if they don't want to admit it. Such assurance, rather than sounding arrogant, is a comfort. He forges ahead in the belief that most boys want to create, but either don't know how or haven't received the right reassurance. He balances genre-specific tips with interviews from popular authors, and does so in a light-hearted, often hilarious tone. Interspersed with doodle-like illustrations and notes "taped" into the book, the text will feel immediately familiar to any readers of a diary-style book.

This book is clear about its audience and purpose, but there is still much to be gained by other readers. Many of the tips and examples could be converted/extracted for use in a general writing class. The recommended reading list in the back also as a multitude of uses. The humor, tone, and stories cited are more likely to be appreciated by boys, especially struggling writers/readers, but presented correctly, this can easily appeal to girls too. Likewise, teachers will likely find insights which may help them approach their male students in a new, more productive way.

Family drama that works for a classroom and bedtime read aloud. Inspired my son and I to make stollen.

Do you already keep a notebook where you track things that inspire you? Then you probably won’t learn anything new here. I gave it only two stars because I had high hopes of learning something new. If, however, you don’t keep a notebook, this book could be revolutionary for you.
