My husband and I listened to this together. Neither of us was totally new to the stories and it met our expectations for the genre. It lacks the flash and polish of modern versions. We had mixed reactions to the very traditional telling. I appreciate hearing a traditional telling and hearing the stories in order. This would be a great book for those who have never heard these stories. It is rated for teen and young adult but I think anyone who likes mythology would enjoy it.

I've admired Kevin Crossley-Holland as a collecter and interpreter of traditional stories and legends. And I was interested by the idea of reading his story of his childhood. He's not much older than me, and our backgrounds aren't so very different.

The account is told by means of themed chapters, so it's not a continuous narrative, but he's told his story by the end of the book. Though clearly a child with friends, it's his strong relationship with his younger sister that shines through, as well as his ability to make his own amusement: such as building up and sustaining his interest in his own personal museum. Very different characters, his parents stayed together for his and his sister's sake. He wonders why. His reflections throughout the book about their failed relationship give the book its underlying sadness, despite his depiction of an essentially happy childhood.… (plus d'informations)

This is the canonical translation of the 95 riddle of the Exeter Book as far as I'm concerned. Very readable, with notes on every riddles possible solution, as well as reconstruction and translation.I read this alongside Porter's translation, and this one is a cut above.

I am unfamiliar with the Norse gods so this was all new to me. Listening to the audio book, sometimes it was confusing with Freyr and Freyja.
