I was/am so interested in the topic, but this is a doctoral thesis more than a book. Literally. I wanted to learn more about representation/participation of POC in speculative fiction, but I had to wad through SO much academic jargon to get to it. Now, I don't mind academic works in general, but it wasn't just that. Literally pages and pages referring to but never quite explaining several different academics' takes on what it means for a work to be an "adaptation," this book assumed a familiarity with current academic discourse in this area, without which large sections of the book were barely readable.
I did learn some great things, which is why it ends up with three stars anyway. I had a lot to add to my reading list. But this book was such a grind. Reading it was physically unpleasant about 80% of the time.
