Carl Degler writes history with flair, and his spirited and readable topical history of the United States, Out of Our Past (1959), has long been a favorite among college students and general readers. In 1972 another of his works, Neither Black nor White (1971), won the Pulitzer Prize in history and afficher plus the Bancroft Prize and was co-winner of the Beveridge Prize. Born in Orange, New Jersey, Degler matriculated at Upsala College and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1947. He taught at Hunter College, New York University, and City College of New York before joining the faculty of Vassar College in 1952. Sixteen years later he moved on to Stanford University, where he was Margaret Byrne Professor until his retirement in 1990. In 1973 and 1974 he was Harmsworth Professor at Oxford University. A szerző ezt a csapdát úgy kerüli el, hogy vonakodik egyetlen, vagy akár csak egy központi szálat kiemelni, hanem okok egész halmazát fekteti le elénk. Tiszteletet parancsoló a tudás, de még inkább az a rendszerező elme, ami lehetővé teszi, hogy Degler szinte minden olyan témát érintsen, ami Amerika jelenét formálhatta: gazdaság, külpolitika, urbanizáció és agrárium, nők, feketék és bevándorlók jogai, családok fejlődése**… Szédítő az információhalmaz, amit megkísérel egymáshoz rendelni***, de még szédítőbb, hogy ebből a sokrétű anyagból képes kiemelni azok eredőjét, olyan ívként írva le az USA történelmét, amiben minden mindennel összefügg. Bár nem minden szakasza ragadott meg egyformán, de ez pusztán az én személyes érdeklődésemet minősíti – amúgy meg egy ilyen nagyívű intellektuális teljesítményre nem is mernék mást adni, mint 5 csillagot. Az egyik legmélyenszántóbb szöveg, amit világhatalomról valaha írtak. Kár, hogy Degler már nem él – kíváncsi vagyok, mint mondana Trumpról.
* Én mondjuk aligha találtam volna meg, ha a gyerekek nem találják ki, hogy a községi könyvtár galériáján, a kézikönyv-szekciónál akarnak bújócskázni.
** Természetesen akad olyan, amit talán érintenie kéne, de nem teszi (például az amerikai őslakosok problémaköre), ám ennek okait az előszóban korrektül és elfogadhatóan megvilágítja.
*** Ez a „szédítő” hatás – no és persze a megdöbbentően apró betűtípus – okozta, hogy ezzel a könyvvel kifejezetten lassan haladtam. Nagyjából minden részegység olyan bőséggel ontotta az új információkat és a belőlük fakadó következtetéseket, hogy gyakorta kellett megállnom pihegni egyet.… (plus d'informations)
