Courte biographie
Charlotte Brame was born in Hinckley, England to a devout Roman Catholic family. As a teenager, she contributed poems and short stories to a Catholic weekly. She attended convent schools in Bristol and Preston and then worked as a governess. In 1863, she married Philip Brame, a London jeweler with whom she had nine children. The family moved to various cities, including London, Brighton, and Manchester. Her husband was an incompetent businessman and drank, and Charlotte had to start supporting the family with her writing. Her work was serialized in periodicals and then reprinted in book form. She used her own name until 1876, when her American publisher Street & Smith developed pseudonyms for her, including Bertha M. Clay and Dora Thorne. She is credited with 73 works, including sentimental short stories, novelettes, and novels. After her death, Street & Smith continued to use Bertha M. Clay as a house name for as many as a dozen other male writers. She died suddenly in 1884 at the age of 48.

What a hoot. (Book was written in 1901) The author was so good at making the protagonist the most evil woman you can imagine. You will feel so sorry for the man she is hoodwinking. She gets what she deserves in the end.

The more books I read by Charlotte M. Brame (aka Bertha M. Clay), the more I like her.

“The Shadow of a Sin” kept me engaged throughout because I cared about the main characters, particularly the lead female Hyacinth.

Hyacinth at first comes across as spoilt and rebellious, but the reader soon finds out that she’s naïve and kind. Hyacinth’s been mislead by a man she thinks she loves, and she's lead astray by him because she suffers a boring lifestyle courtesy of her rigid aunt.

As the story develops, Hyacinth’s character becomes increasingly appealing, as does the plot. Of course, because of the time this was written, the problems and obstacles the characters face are, in many respects, trivial compared to how society’s values have changed. As a result, this novel won’t appeal to everyone, but it suited my tastes.

I found this a bit slow-paced, with little excitement on the whole, yet it was good in parts.

The title character doesn’t feature all that much. Dora is more of a central figure rather than a leading lady.

The author has some good ideas but gives too much away with unsubtle remarks of what’s to come. By hinting at what’s going to happen later on, she lessens the impact of important events, thus reducing or even eliminating the suspense.

Ms Brame’s is also too fond of adjectives. The following quote shows how her frequent use of double adjectives results in clunky sentences:

“The children looked with frank, fearless eyes into his plain, honest face.”

Despite Ms Brame’s faults, I consider her a good writer with the potential of being a better one. Her overall plot in “Dora Thorne” is not flawed. It’s a well-constructed story. As mentioned, her elements of style and the unsubtle hints of what fate awaits certain cast members are the problems.

The characters are mostly well-depicted. My favourite is the beautiful Valentine Charteris. The author painted her vividly in terms of appearance and personality. Beatrice Earle is another strong character creation.

In short, “Dora Thorne” was worth checking out, but I wouldn’t read it again.

This is a well-plotted novella that opens with a hook to keep the reader interested: a handsome man of 20, seemingly a gentleman of worth, is caught in the act of stealing a valuable watch and appears happy to be arrested.

As the title suggests, there's a woman behind the young man's actions.

Another entertaining work by Charlotte M. Brame.
