Someone has stolen the world's most famous painting and replaced it with a fake. When the mission looks impossible, the world calls upon UNACO. After lengthy negotiations the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam agrees to send its priceless Rembrandt, 'Night Watch', on a tour of the world's art galleries. Security is intensive. Even so, when the painting arrives in New York it is discovered to be a fake. UNACO is immediately called into action. Agents Mike Graham, C.W. Langzaam opende hij het koffertje. Een fractie van een seconde voor de ontploffing zag hij de keurig aangebrachte explosieven. De taxi, die zojuist het Paleis op de Dam was gepasseerd, explodeerde. Gloeiendhete stukken verwrongen metaal vlogen in het rond, dodelijke projectielen die niets en niemand spaarden. Alle stringente veiligheidsmaatregelen ten spijt is het onheil toch geschied: de Nachtwacht, het pronkstuk van het Amsterdamse Rijksmuseum, is tijdens zijn toernee langs 's werelds grootste musea, verwisseld voor een vervalsing. De UNACO, de geheime anti-misdaad organisatie van de Verenigde Naties, krijgt tot taak het gestolen meesterwerk, én de misdadigers die dit op hun kerfstok hebben, boven water te krijgen. UNACO-agenten Mike Graham, C.W. Whitlock en Sabrina Carver volgen de route die het doek heeft afgelegd minutieus - een zoektocht die hen voert van New York, via Amsterdam naar het Rio de Janeiro in carnavalstijd.
