It is often surprising to me how very different each of Kadare’s subjects are; he chooses remarkably different settings to tell his stories…though his stories often address the same issue(s). This is a coming-of-age story of a sort, taking place in Gjirokaster (Kadare’s hometown) toward the end of WWII when the town keeps being occupied and re-occupied by opposing forces. But that’s merely the setting for the childhood of our protagonist; one can’t help but wonder how much of the story is autobiographical. There are lots of stories, mostly from the viewpoint of the pre-teen narrator: his neighbors, his extended family; town characters; and aspects of the war and soldiers told by someone whose insights are intriguing despite the fact that there is much that he doesn’t understand. All in all, not my favorite Kadare, but an instructive story well-told. ( )

De tal manera arranca esta novela sobre la infancia del narrador en una ciudad sin nombre, de casas de piedra eterna, sostenidas entre sí como por arte de magia. Una ciudad que vive el trágico presente de la Segunda Guerra Mundial con la ocupación italiana, los bombardeos británicos, los contraataques griegos, la llegada de los guerrilleros, los comunistas, la primera noticia sobre Enver Hoxa y la última ocupación alemana.

In de eerste Nederlandstalige uitgaven was de meer zeggende titel : ‘Kroniek van de stenen stad’ die m.i. dichter bij de inhoud van het boek aanleunt. Herhaaldelijk wordt de fictieve stad door Kadare beschreven als een massief stenen geheel dat langs een bergrots opkruipt…
Het verhaal is gebaseerd op ware historische feiten. Vanaf 1939 werd Albanië op korte tijd herhaaldelijk bezet door vreemde mogendheden met name: Italië, met intervallen ook door de Grieken, dan door de partizanen en uiteindelijk door de Duitsers. De wisselende bezetting werd verdreven door de partizanen en dan kwam Albanië uiteindelijk onder de Russische en de Stalinistische invloed. De leider van deze Partizanen was Enver Hoxha die met zuivering strategieën een Albanië in rust creëerde.
Het verhaal wordt door een ‘Ik’-verteller aangebracht. Deze ‘ik’ is de auteur zelf, die deze historische geschiedenis neerschrijft vanuit zijn ervaring en herinnering als tienjarige jongen. Deze kind-visie brengt dan ook het verhaal in een subjectieve kleur. De waarheid wordt eigenlijk niet erg vertekend, want het politiek-militair gegeven en de wrede gebeurtenissen worden niet beschreven. We lezen enkel dat er verschillende lijken op straat liggen, ergens wat opgeknoopte mensen en de vlammen van een brandende stad, gezien vanuit de verte…. Ook lezen we over een executie door de partizanen, waarbij de kinderen niet aanwezig zijn.
In feite handelt het boek over een -voor een kind dan toch- boeiende wereld. Enerzijds zien we de sociale context in de stad en in het dorp, het grote bijgeloof, de voorspellingen en tevens de wijsheid van de oude vrouwtjes en het patriarchaal karakter van de samenleving. Zo ook zien we de sterke band tussen de buren en families alsook de kindervriendschappen. Anderzijds ontdekken we een onschuldige belangstelling van de kinderen voor de vliegtuigen, de bommenwerpers, het oude stadskanon, het verblijf in de schuilkelders, tot zelfs een kinderlijk pochende visie over wiens huis nu toch het hevigst brandt….. Kortom voor de kinderen waren de bezettingen eerder een boeiend avontuur en geenszins traumatiserend. Een avontuurlijk bezoek, voor de vijandige bezettingen, aan het slachthuis met het bloederige slacht-gebeuren had daarentegen wel een impact op de twee vriendjes.
Ieder hoofdstuk wordt voorafgegaan door een cursief of een kroniek, wat dan toch weer enig verband brengt met de actualiteit.
De schrijfstijl is bijzonder poëtisch en de knappe maar eenvoudige structuur met de kronieken houdt de lezer toch bij de realiteit. Het is zeker geen sprookje!
Voor mij is dit boek een niet zwaar op de hand liggend meesterwerk met een bijzonder geslaagde visie op een harde wereld, waargenomen vanuit de kinderogen.

Never has an adult written so convincingly in the voice of a child than Ismail Kadare in Chronicle in Stone. Set in a small crossroads town in southern Albania that closely resembles Kadare’s home town, Chronicle follows a dreamy juvenile boy who imagines the relationships between houses, between and among streets, between clouds and the sky. World War II air raids force the unnamed boy and his fellow townspeople out of their homes and into the citadel. Not even these visits to the dank, maze-like fortress can ground this boy’s flights of fancy. The whole novel is riveting, atmospheric, and utterly convincing.

The boy predictably idolizes the aircraft occupying the newly constructed airfield across the river, until a monstrous, silver behemoth arrives and asserts itself as alpha. He spends much of the novel in the company of his neighborhood’s old women, who are a funny combination of superstitious and worldly wise. In particular, his grandmother knows and understands much about the real world, and condemns a good portion of it. He watches the occupying armies come and go: Greek, then Italian, two and three times each, and they all anticipate the ultimate monstrous German forces.

He’s acquainted with two young terrorists in their twenties, partisans, as they’re called, who encourage and belittle him by turns. Their leader, another young man from the same town, called Enver Hoxha, has left to study abroad. His specific inclusion in the book has been seen as a sop to Albanian authorities to allow publication, but shadowy veiled references that hint at his rumored unorthodox sexual orientation have been cited as well.

Chronicle in Stone was first published in Albania in 1971. Its English translation wasn’t released until 1987. It balances the daydreams of a young boy with the horrific events of political and wartime violence. This balance makes it possible to view the bloody events of the novel from something of a distance; this lens also perfectly catches the modern anarchic political machinations while acknowledging Albania’s remoteness and inward—and backward—focus. It’s an intriguing construct, very rewarding, very balanced, and very strong. And the point of view gives the novel an enchanted quality. For these reasons it won the International Booker Prize in 2005. ( )

"Kronikë në gur" afirmohet menjëherë si vepër thelbësore në kuadrin e krejt krijimtarisë së Kadaresë. Është roman i hyrjes në jetë dhe në letërsi. Tregimtari është autori, që përpiqet të rishohë me sytë e fëmijës tetë vitet e para të jetës së tij. Që nga kjo fëmijëri e kanë zanafillën elementet që përbëjnë "universin Kadare". Ai fiton sensin e tij të mprehtë të fantastikes, apo të "realizmit magjik".

Pjerrësia marramendëse e rrugëve, prania kudo e gurit, banesat e çuditshme, të mëdha e të fortifikuara, kështjellaburg, që zotëron mbi disa lagje, pamja spektakolare mbi fushën e Drinos dhe malet, e gjithë kjo do të formojë e stërhollojë pak nga pak vështrimin e shkrimtarit të ardhshëm. Gjirokastra të fton në magji dhe, siç shkruan Kadare, "duket sikur qyteti është ngritur për të zgjuar ide të mëdha".

Ai e quan një fat të madh që e nisi jetën e tij në një mjedis të tillë: "Sa më shumë unë mësoja sekretet e artit të të shkruarit, aq më shumë bindesha që kisha patur fat të rritesha në këtë qytet më se të veçantë, që kisha dëgjuar shpjegimet e para për botën nga goja e këtyre plakave të vjetra e të mençura, veshur me të zeza, që mbanin kupën e kafesë në njërën dorë dhe tejqyrën në tjetrën".
