"Luke Williamson thought that things were going just about according to plan: He and his partner owned a couple of river-boats and were making their mark on the run between St. Louis and New Orleans. Then the Mary Justice went down off Natchez. Williamson had lost not only the boat but his closest friend. The banks were getting ready to foreclose, the insurance company was looking for a way out of paying." "Mid-South Insurance went about things the right way: They hired Masey Baldridge to investigate the claim. Of course, they expected him to place the blame on the boat's pilot. But Baldridge had other ideas. He knew that something wasn't right, and he knew that he'd find out just what was wrong . . . as soon as he had another drink. The fact that shortly before Williamson had worn blue and Baldridge was nursing a wound received in a skirmish with Union troops near Selma made no difference to him." This is a fictional historical mystery, set seven years after the end of the Civil War on the Mississippi. A paddle ship captain, Luke Williamson, learns that his partner perished when his ship went down in deep water with no good explanation for the tragedy. Masey Baldridge, a former southern soldier, is an insurance investigator who is looking for answers. In the midst of many interesting historical lacunae, a fine mystery, a bit of suspense, and several really fine characters, some of the realities of Southern recovery from the devastation of the war are uncovered. Interest in Bewer's series might be rekindled with the recent publication of other Civil war and post Civil war novels written from the Southern viewpoint. (Galveston, PG Nagle; The Homecoming, Raine Cantrell) ( )

Along the Saint Louis wharf, the Paragon's smokestacks belched a black cloud into the cool October breeze as Captain Luke Williamson lifted a gold watch from his vest pocket and examined it for the fifth time in as many minutes.
