A decent effort to write within the television series timeline and not distort the space/time continuum (after all, that would be science fiction. The best thing about this novel is the time given to the "lab rats" instead of the usual second tier support roles.
I think the author tried to develop too many plot lines. The Greg/Catherine line was expanded to two cases and were brought to decent conclusions. The Nick/Ray/Brass line (the one the title was drawn from) however, was more disappointing. Nick's thread and Brass's thread again were decent, but Ray's thread was almost unacceptable.
It's still a good light read, though. ( )

As usual there are two stories here. The first has to do with an apparently justified shooting by a security guard on the estate of the wife of a big Vegas mover and shaker that went missing years ago. The second is the murder of the Chairman of the Grey Rock Indian tribe, a man that had lots of supporters and lots of critics, both who have strong opinions about things like blood quantum laws (the laws that help people get defined as Native Americans or not). As evidenced by the title the blood quantum laws are a critical part of the story and they were nicely explained in it. I always like it when a book, even a media tie in like this can teach me something and it doesn't happen often.

There's not Sara or Grissom in this one, it takes place after Grissom has left, but before Sara comes back, but there is a lot of Greg as well as more of the lab techs and Doc Robbins. Characters that are usually woefully underused in the CSI novels (hey, they've done a CSI tech episode or two, they should do it in a book too!)

The plots and their end points aren't exactly wicked surprising, and actually are much simpler than a lot of the previous CSI novels which was unfortunate (though I guess it could also be that I've read wayy too many of these types of mysteries). Still, overall an enjoyable novel. ( )

Predictable bun fun to read. ( )
