When ex-priest Tom Shaman, jaded from years in the LA ghetto, decides on a last-minute trip to Venice, he gets much more than the break he'd been hoping for. A brutal killer is on the loose and Tom finds himself catapulted into a series of ritualistic killings unlike anything Venice has ever seen. Enlisted by the Italian police, Tom teams up with investigator Valentina Morassi to dig deep into the city's darkest history, stretching from an ancient civilisation in 700 BC and the sexual decadence of 18th century Italy to the gritty underworld of modern-day Venice. As Valentina and Tom trace the killings through the centuries, they uncover a deadly secret, a secret that generations have killed to protect: a priceless Etruscan mosaic known as the Gates of Hell.… (plus d'informations)

This book had all the components I Like - historical backdrop, future action based on the historical dimension and a likeable main character. However, despite this I felt let down by it for some reason, in ess nice it just did not hold my interest or excite me enough. I think this is possibly because through most of the book we had alternating chapters set in the here and now, along with one set in the past. As a result it never built up the pace and tension until the end. In my humble opinion it would have been better to have bigger sections in each timeframe. However I enjoyed my previous book written under the pseudonym of Sam Christer, so will continue to pick up books by him and see if they improve. ( )
