If all history was written so well it would be much better liked. The whole of Roman history is condensed into 535 pages. The broad sweep of development and the key personalities are well brought out. Very favorable to the Grachii. Generally favorable to Caesar, less so to Augustus whom Baker describes as a cool and calculating realist while Caesar is portrayed as a visionary who just didn't have time to time to get everything done. Contrast with the totally opposite view of Michael Grant (Caesar). Very negative on the optimates (with some slack for Cicero but none at all for Cato). I would love to find out what Baker's politics were. ( ) aucune critique | ajouter une critique
