In my opinion, the book "Wild Wings" by Jane Yolen is a great good for young readers. One thing I liked about this book is that it was informational, but was also in the form of poetry which I think added an interesting aspect to the book. For example, the text reads "As if sunshine, fell down on a branch, then gathered itself together, for one solid moment, the warbler brightens spring." This poem was called "Wilsons Warbler" and added another element to the traditional informational book. On some pages, information is found in the poems, but every page has additional information at the bottom about the bird that is being discussed on that page. From the poem I previously mentioned, the information at the bottom of the page says: "Wilsons Warbler, like many warblers, is a small, brightly colored bird. The males are the singers. These warblers especially love to perch in willow thickets." I also liked how the book included a variety of types of poems. This includes haiku, free verse, narrative, and generally short or long poems. The pictures were also full page, and were photographs of the bird that was talked about in the information and poem on that page. A lot of them were close up so you could see detail, or included the bird in its natural environment which was helpful. The big idea of this book was to inform readers about a variety of birds through poetry and general information. ( )
