This is a book of many poems. There are poems from Mother Goose, about outdoors, plants and animals, make-believe, grownups, highways and cities, fun, and many more about everyday things. It has a lot of the traditional childrens poems and even more that would be new for most children. It also has pictures on almost every page which makes it more interesting for children.

I like these book of poems because it has traditional poems and even more that I have never read before. I also like that it has picture because sometimes poetry can be boring for children but picture make it more interesting for them.

I would definitely use this book if I was doing a poetry lesson. I want to make learning poetry fun for my students. I would have them read some that they know and some that they dont know. Also I would have them try to write their own poem about anything they are interested in and maybe draw a picture to go with it.

Summary: This poem anthology offers beginning poems to get students interested in poetry. Subject arranges the poems, which is good because if a student wants to find a poem about animals they can find this very easily.

Critical Response: The illustrations are very captivating and do a great job of bringing students into the world of poetry.

Classroom Connections: This book would work well in station time. As students participate in different stations around the room they could come to this station and read a poem. I will have students pick one subject and then find a poem in the book about that subject. I will have students write their own poems and they can use this book as a resource to help them. ( )

If you can only have one volume of poetry for children, I think one of the early (pre 1970, perhaps pre 1960) Chidlcraft 'Poetry and Rhyme' volumes is the one to have. Not only do they have a very sweet and comprehensive selection of early childhood poems. they are usually easy to find and inexpensive
