Fiction. Science Fiction. HTML:

The TARDIS materialises on board the maiden voyage of a pioneering space cruiser, travelling from Earth to the planet Eternity. The Doctor has just started exploring the huge, hi-tech Interstitial Transposition Vehicle when there is a loud bang, a massive jolt and a flash of light. Shortly afterwards, he discovers that nearly all the passengers and crew have disappeared. Unless the Doctor and flight attendant Sugar MacAuley can take control and steer the ship, they could crash-land or keep slipping through space forever. And as if that wasn't enough, something awful awaits them on Eternity.

Written exclusively for audio by Dan Abnett and read by David Tennant, The Last Voyage features the Doctor as played by David Tennant in the acclaimed hit series from BBC Television.

David Tennant makes these audiobooks fantastic. He's able to change his voice for five different characters who are all speaking at once. ( )

The Doctor is on the maiden voyage of space cruiser, but, after what appears to be a crash, most of the passengers and crew disappears and mysterious beings appear. Enjoyable story with a few quite unexpected twists and a satisfactorily resolution. It's more of a mystery story than an action-filled one, although it does pick up towards the end. I have to say that David Tennant is a fantastic reader, but I wish he had made Sugar a little more subtle. ( )

Enjoyable fix for those of us fixated on the Tenth Doctor. Great to hear his voice, especially when he goes into character reading the Doctor's dialogue. This felt very much like an episode of the show - maybe one of the holiday specials - right down to the sonic screwdriver and TARDIS sound effects, and the theme music. ( )

I saw a very favourable review of this Tenth Doctor audio book in DWM, but started off feeling a bit disappointed, particularly after my enjoyment of Dead Air; once again, the Doctor ends up on a ship and has to deal with peculiar forces which appear to be attacking the crew (the fact that I'm also in the middle of rewatching the Second Doctor base-under-siege stories didn't help). But actually it grew on me, really for two reasons: first, Tennant, once again, is a brilliant reader, this time telling the story in third person so that he switches from his native Scots to his Doctor's Estuary English, and likewise for the other characters as appropriate; and secondly because the story turns out to have a genuinely good sfnal concept behind it, which really tied up all the ends rather neatly.
