This is a beautifully published book with a great introduction. 'Room With a View'', 'Where Angels Fear to Tread' are two of my favourite books in the world that I return to again and again so I was intrigued to see there was a EM Forster book of short stories I hadn't come across.

The stories are a world away from the gentality of RWAV and WAFTT they are mischievous, with twists and turns... you get the feeling your reading a much more personal EM Forster book.

I enjoyed but didn't get the emotional attachement that I have for the characters in his other stories. ( )

These eight stories by E.M. Foster, finally published now (this edition with a nice foreword by A, Chaudhuri), are another example of the great literal qualities of this famous writer. The subject homosexuality is the central part of each story, but only the first one (The Obelisk) has a funny twist. The other narratives mainly show how secretive the central characters had to lead their life. Sexuality was apparently abandoned from social life, let alone homosexuality. That causes those negative emotions causes to this natural feeling of men. The mind gets separated from the body, just like in the books and stories by Thomas Mann. Whether it concerns in businessman in the countryside who gets involved with a delivery boy, a soldier or just the next person. Those persons can't lead a normal life due to secretiveness and danger of being discovered. Foster shows all of this and much more of a hyprocritical society. A moving read. ( )

Desconocía esta obra de Forster, por eso la solicité. En realidad no forma parte de lo que podríamos llamar canon forsteriano, porque no deja de ser un relato más que una novela. Sin embargo, me parece bien que actualmente se reinterprete su obra, y textos que antaño eran considerados marginales dentro de su creación, ahora adquieran actualidad y se recoloquen entre sus piezas más consolidadas. Es por ello que leo The Obelisk con otros ojos, con la seguridad de que en un futuro (como ya ocurriera con el descubrimiento de Maurice a la muerte de Forster) volverán a resurgir nuevas obras y nuevas lecturas cada vez más interesantes e intensas.

Leuk kado via Early Reviewers van Hesperus! Mooi verzorgde uitgave. Lijvige boeken spreken meer aan dan kortverhalen, maar dit zijn pareltjes. Vooral het titelverhaal 'The obelisk' is erg genietbaar. Het schetst een vrij saai burgerlijk Engels echtpaar, dat bij nadere beschouwing niet zo voorspelbaar is als gedacht. Gelukkig voor hen..misschien?! Schijnheiligheid en het van alle tijden en plaatsen zijnde klasseonderscheid zijn de rode draad in de verhalenbundel. Een aangenaam én gepolijst tussendoortje! ( )
