When a wife reaches her breaking point and her husband begins an ill-advised affair, civil war breaks out within their family Erica Tate wouldn't mind getting up in the morning if she enjoyed her children more. Until puberty struck, Jeffrey and Matilda were absolute darlings, but in the last year, they have become sullen, insufferable little monsters. Erica's husband, Brian, is so deeply immersed in university life-and the legs of a half-literate flower child named Wendy-that he either doesn't notice his wife's misery or simply doesn't care. Worst of all, their pleasant little neighborhood is transforming into a subdivision. And with each new ranch house that springs up around their lot, Erica's marriage inches closer to disaster. Admitting she is sick of her family is only the first step. When the Tate household tips into full-scale emotional combat, Erica must do her best to ensure that she comes out on top. In this darkly comic tale, there is nothing more important than having a good exit strategy. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Alison Lurie including rare images from the author's collection.… (plus d'informations)

I enjoyed Foreign Affairs so much I was excited to try more of Lurie's work. This one didn't work as well for me but I did like it and I'm glad I read it. It's about a couple approaching middle age in the late 60s, each struggling to discover what feminism, the sexual revolution, and other counterculture movements mean for their own lives and especially their marriage. Much of it feels extremely dated now and it's a bit too long but I think Lurie sticks the landing. ( )

Great read. Campus novel set in late 1960s. Brian and Erica’s marriage put at risk by Brian’s affair with a student. Looks at student politics, feminism, Vietnam war, alongside campus life. ( )

Read during Summer 2003

Someone suggested Alison Lurie to me but now I'm not sure why. It was very hard to enjoy the book when I intensely disliked all the characters. The Tates are Brian, a political science professor and Erica, his stay at home wife. They live in thinly veiled Ithaca where Brian teaches at Cornell. (She can call is Corinth all she likes, I think it was the gorges that were the final tip off.) Brian is a pompous twit and Erica likes to nobly suffer while helping others despite themselves. Their two teenage children are ill-mannered louts. Brian eventually succumbs to a grad student, Wendy, who throws herself at his feet and Erica becomes convinced that Brian must divorce her and marry wet little Wendy. Unfortunately, this is only the first third of the book. It gets worse. I'll be book crossing it soon.

Really just couldn't get on with this at this time. Had absolutely no pull to continue reading. The characters are unlikable (which isn't normally a bad thing for me) and it simply didn't seem to be going anywhere.

Wrong book wrong time for this one I feel.

Lurie schrijft moralistische vertellingen. ( )
