While I am not the biggest fan of short stories, each of Anderson's held a charm that made me enjoy the entire collection. This is not my first time reading many of these tales but this particular edition does an excellent job with grouping the tales and giving backgrounds which elevates the entire experience. There were definitely some stories that I sort of blanked on but theses were few and far between. On the whole, I think I enjoyed his twists on folk tales the most. Stories like Little Claus and Big Claus, the Wild Swans, the Little Match Girl, the Tinderbox, the Steadfast Tim Soldier, and the Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep have been and will forever remain favorites. But they are joined now by other less popular (albeit equally enjoyable) tales such as the Garden of Eden, Auntie Toothache, the Traveling Companion, She Was No Good , and "Something." While stories like the Little Mermaid and the Ugly Duckling are fairly ubiquitous, reading a complete collection of Anderson's tales helps the reader form an actual opinion about his work and his development as an artist. I would definitely recommend this book for people who would like to form a complete opinion of H. C. Anderson. ( )
I knew that Hans Christian Andersen wrote a great number of fairy tales and the basic stories of some of them, but I was delightful to sit down and actually read them. Some I'd never heard about and I enjoyed those too. ( )
I was somewhat amazed by the large number of fairy tales that Hans Christian Andersen wrote. Apparently he wrote more than 200 in all, of which over sixty are included in this volume. In this book these tales are grouped into different sections according to the type of tales that they are. For example there are some which are grouped under the title 'Original Fairy Tales' which include The Little Mermaid and Thumbelina which are two of my favorites. Others are grouped under the title 'Evangelical and Religious Tales' which include The Red Shoes and The Little Match Girl. These often have a moral to them. Some of my other favorites include The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Princess and the Pea, and The Nightingale. There are also many more of which I had never heard, and it was a joy to read many of them. ( )
