A very thorough look at the former Yugoslavia and the nasty conflict that took place there. Clears up what can be murky waters for most people, when thinking about this region. Also brings to light a battle and Canada's contribution, also little heard of, and the government's neglect of the soldiers that fought there. ( )

Carol Off's book chronicles the events surrounding Canada's involvement in the little known Battle of Medak Pocket. Drawing from her in depth research, Off paints a raw and sometimes nauseating picture of life on the ground for soldiers and civilians, the complex political landscape of the Balkans, and the lingering effects that the Canadian's involved have to deal with. This is a good read for anyone interested in the history Canada's involvement in UN peace keeping operations. ( )

This was a book a long time coming. I had a friend who fought in Medak Pocket, and when he would tell people about what he did they would laugh at him and call him a liar... He wasn't and Canadians should be ashamed of the way those soldiers who returned were treated. They pulled off an nearly impossible task by risking their own lives enforce peace... the first time the UN had turned to open combat to do so. This was an excellent book that needed to be written for the soldiers who had to witness mass graves and risk their lives to prevent and document the ongoing genocide. Many are suffering today, but doing so in silence since their heroism has gone unrecognized by even their fellow soldiers for so long. ( )

This is an eye opening book that spills the beans on a very recent, but largely unknown chapter of Canadian/Yugoslav military history. The author helps us out by giving us a fairly succinct history of Serb-Croat relations that sets the stage for their robust ethnic cleansing campaigns that Canadian ‘Peacekeepers’ witnessed. The description of the UN/Croatian politicking surrounding the war and the aftermath of the mission concerning the Canadian governments treatment of the soldiers is deplorable. This is a very informative book that all people with an interest in military history should read. ( )

Some of the time it is difficult to follow, but I bet that you knew little if anything about this episod in Canadian military history. I believe that the people described in this book should have been treated better by the Canadian government. ( )
