Founded in 1947, the Living Theatre is the oldest experimental theatre group still existing in the U.S. This book represents itself as a presentation of the group as much as a presentation of theatrical spectacle, noting that it is the essential philosophy of a group which overturned classic and experimental dramatic forms to replace them with political protest and moral anarchy. Within the book, the Living Theatre's point-of-view is expressed in words and photographs which alternate between daily life and the stage. Poetic and political statements alternate with the bulk of the book consisting of black and white images, varied in content but universal in their denunciation of the alienating structure of capitalist society.
