Hollywood in the 1920's sparkled with talent, confidence, and opportunity. Enter Irving Thalberg of Brooklyn, who survived childhood illness to run Universal Pictures at twenty; co-found Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer at twenty-four; and make stars of Lon Chaney, Norma Shearer, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, and Jean Harlow. Known as Hollywood's "Boy Wonder," Thalberg created classics such as Ben-Hur, Tarzan the Ape Man, Grand Hotel, Freaks, Mutiny on the Bounty, and The Good Earth, but died tragically at thirty-seven. His place in the pantheon should have been assured, yet his films were not reissued for thirty years, spurring critics to question his legend and diminish his achievements. In this definitive biography, illustrated with rare photographs, Mark A. Vieira sets the record straight, using unpublished production files, financial records, and correspondence to confirm the genius of Thalberg's methods. In addition, this is the first Thalberg biography to utilize both his recorded conversations and the unpublished memoirs of his wife, Norma Shearer. Irving Thalberg is a compelling narrative of power and idealism, revealing for the first time the human being behind the legend.… (plus d'informations)

Excellent biography of the "boy genius" Irving Thalberg who did so much to make MGM a success in its early days by promoting stars such as John Gilbert and Norma Shearer (who eventually became his wife). Thalberg was a fragile child who was born with a heart defect and was told he would not live past the age of 30. With an overprotective mother, he spent much of his childhood in bed reading the classics. When he started out in the film business at Universal, he learned the business and became head of production at MGM. He developed a team of great writers, producers, directors, and stars but eventually clashed with studio head, Louis B. Mayer. Thalberg made it to age 37 but passed away of pneumonia. As a fan of early Hollywood of the 20's and 30's, I found the book hard to put down. The author relied on interviews with those who knew or worked with Thalberg, previous biographies of Thalberg, and an unpublished work by wife Norma Shearer. I would recommend the book to anyone who wants to know the history of Hollywood or MGM. I would have given the book 5 stars but felt the print too small and too light on the ink making it difficult to read. ( )

Uncritical biography of a dynamic man who consolidated movie-making power in the producer’s office. Thalberg became the creative head of M-G-M and was married to a great star of his era, Norma Shearer. Their two forceful and smart mothers evidence themselves as both good and bad influences on their children.

Probably a lot of the romance associated with him is due to his having died before he was 40 and having accomplished an incredible amount in his short working life, which began when he was just 20.

The book is full of movie facts, avoids being dry or boring, but just is not worthy of serious reading. As a skim or quick read, it's fine, and is bound to be a favorite of those who enjoy Hollywood puff pieces and also of readers who enjoy tycoon nonfiction. ( )

[This] is the third biography of Thalberg, and far and away the most thoroughly researched, comprehensive, and penetrating... This book is as close to definitive as any biography of Irving Thalberg is likely to get.

Film history has long been told from the vantage point of the director or the star, or focused our attention on a specific genre, period, or national cinema, but rarely has it come from the perspective of the producer. Vieira's biography offers an unusually animated and revealing tour of Hollywood in the 1920s and '30s.
