This is a book I wish I owned and wish I had discovered it earlier. I've had cats almost all my life, and know most of their quirks, but didn't know all the reasons behind them. This is a good book for someone who thinks they're a dog person, but are on the fence when it comes to cats. It may sway them either way, but hopefully for cats. I loved the drawings that came with each point made. Why do cats get stuck in trees? Why do cats bring us their latest catch? Why do cats always land on their feet? Why do cats torture their prey? These and 36 other curious cat behaviors are informatively and lightheartedly answered in the handsomely illustrated Why Cats Do That. An original pencil drawing illustrates each insightful explanation of odd but characteristic cat actions, social graces and sometimes kooky quirks. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Although the title seems to suggest the book will explain or inform the reader about why cats do certain things, it falls more into the genre of "cat appreciation" literature rather than any scientific treatment of the topic. Most of the topics raised by the book are addressed with observations that anyone who has lived around cats will already be familiar with, mixed with common-sense inferences and sentimental speculation by the author. In some cases, such as "Why do cats meow?", the only answer given is: "Nobody knows, but it sure is cute, isn't it?" The pen-and-ink illustrations are serviceable enough but not particularly memorable.
All in all, cat lovers may find this mildly amusing light reading, but don't expect any real insights into cat behavior from this book. ( )
