In straightforward language and without math, Tom Bethell argues that the facts of physics can be accounted for without relativity. The case was first made by Petr Beckmann, in his Einstein Plus Two. Einstein's special relativity assumed an invariant speed of light, but experiments with atomic clocks have shown a difference in speed to the east and west. If the local gravitational field is the long-sought ether, as Beckmann maintained, then such a speed differential is expected. General relativity gives results consistent with experiment, but by a roundabout route. Classical physics brings us more simply to the same destination.
