In the third of Donald James' novels about Russian police inspector Constantin Vadim, Russia is suffering from a tuberculosis epidemic, and Vadim travels to New York and ends up involved in the presidential campaign of a candidate who supports Russian aid, while also investigating several murders. Vadim remains a very appealing character, and the novel moves along smartly on several levels, working as both a murder mystery and a political thriller. Rich and satisfying, I only wish there were many more Vadim novels to read. ( )
