The following is a review of the short story 'More Light'; for my review of The Hastur Cycle in its entirety, follow the link above. Blish is a very clever author, accomplishing what would have been a drearily insurmountable task for a lesser writer. Namely, he reconstructed from a few quotations found in Robert W. Chambers' short story collection, The King in Yellow, a play which has never existed, but which is supposed in the stories to reveal shocking truths about the human condition. Ah, and he presents it in such a way--through a framing story--as to make you care. The narrator of 'More Light' is drawn into the mystery of the play and its supposedly murky origins, and the reader is drawn with him. The play is interesting, though not especially shocking, and the framing story has a surprise ending that sent a bit of a chill up my spine. ( )
