These vest-pocket mysteries rely on a careful reading of the text. There's no hidden tricks, and the author plays fair. You just have to read the mysteries carefully in order to unravel them. And that's why, in no small measure, after 90 years the mysteries still hold up. Ripley did a very good job with these, and they hold up better than the contemporary "Baffle Books," which often rely on dated clues. Recommended. ( ) aucune critique | ajouter une critique
This is a collection of 71 very brief tales, each featuring a crime submitted for the consideration of fictional detective, Professor Fordney. In these accounts every fact, every clue necessary to the solution is given. The answer can be found in the story itself. Each problem has only one possible solution. Readers have the chance to work on a basis of absolute equality with Professor Fordney -to match their wits with those of the professor and the criminal.
