Maria Tallchief is quite an inspiring person, but this book just didn't resonate with me in the way I hoped it would. ( ) This book would be read both individually and as a class in the course of a week with Fourth and Fifth Graders. Students could do research on the Native American reservations and compare and contrasts different tribes throughout the United States. They could then record these differences and similarities and share them with the class. For science, the students could reserach the enviromental causes and effects of the oil industry as mentioned in the book. I could use this book in first or second grade to use as a model for non-fiction literature and text features. I would read the book aloud, since it's above grade level for first and second graders, and I'd ask the students to be thinking about text features they notice. Then, after reading the book through once, I would pass out certain copied pages from the book and help the class label all the text features to keep as reference. I could also use this book in fourth grade. In the fourth grade, students learn about state history. After learning about Native Americans that lived in KY, I would have the students read this book at home and then come in at the end of the week prepared to compare and contrast Native Americans from our region with those of other regions. This book is a good way to combine history and language arts for fourth and fifth grade students. I would use it mainly for fifth grade students because of the length. This book is a quality book and would hold the student's interest better than a text book would. Students could use this book as a source to write a paper or another biography about the person. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
